Deuteronomy 9:5–6 NKJV
5 It is not because of your righteousness or the uprightness of your heart that you go in to possess their land, but because of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord your God drives them out from before you, and that He may fulfill the word which the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. 6 Therefore understand that the Lord your God is not giving you this good land to possess because of your righteousness, for you are a stiff-necked people.
Lamentations 3:22–24 NKJV
22 Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not. 23 They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness. 24 “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “Therefore I hope in Him!”
Sermon: “You ain’t that good!”
Text:
"It is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness."
Read: vv. 22-26
INTRODUCTION:
Story: Race against my son: Khari just a few week ago!
Dunning & Kruger effect:
is a cognitive bias in which people mistakenly assess their cognitive ability as greater than it is. It is related to the cognitive bias of  illusory superiority and comes from the inability of people to recognize their lack of ability. Without the self-awareness of metacognition, people cannot objectively evaluate their competence or incompetence.
In our pursuit of life, liberty, and happiness, we are prone to give our own cleverness more credit than it deserves. This fact remains, however, that God is "upholding all things by the word of His power," and "in him we live, and move, and have our being" (; ). Thanks be to God, for He is still with us!
We are given the blessings and mercy in life not because we are deserving, entitled or worthy. It is because of Your grace that we are not consumed.
THIS TEXT REVEALS AT LEAST FOUR THINGS ABOUT GOD:
God is not a merciless tyrant as some people imply.
God shows mercy beyond what mankind deserves.
God is not slothful in His mercy—"renewed" daily.
God's faithfulness exceeds man's comprehension.
Let’s get serious...
When we compare with , we really start to see how good God really is and how He loves us so much.
It is not because we are good that God shows up for us; on the contrary, we ain’t that good, but just not as bad as the other nations.
“...but it is because of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord is driving them out from before you.”
The New King James Version (Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 1982), .
Let’s put that in perspective; Not as bad as others is relative:
If you have a 520 credit score but you know of people with 420, they are both bad
Cursing out only two people today instead of the unusual eight to ten is improvement, but it is still bad.
Coming to work 20 mins late is an improvement over and hour, but it is still bad.
says it again, it is not because of your righteousness (works) or the uprightness of your heart (moral), but because of the wickedness of those who are there in the land now.
God is allowing blessings and mercy for you because He is good.
Let me make is a little clearer....
You were not in an accident when you were on your way to to some place you should not be at (Goodness of God)
Your life was spread when you told the boss you were taking a sick day when you know you weren’t sick (Goodness of God)
Your life was not ended when you doing drugs or unconscious from drinking (Goodness of God)
You were not diagnosed with that deadly disease from eating everything you wanted (Goodness of God)
Your children are still in the church despite your un-Chirst-like parenting (Goodness of God)
And your marriage is still together despite your craziness (Goodness of God)
Deuteronomy 9:6 NKJV
6 Therefore understand that the Lord your God is not giving you this good land to possess because of your righteousness, for you are a stiff-necked people.
The reason God is doing good is because of His promises...
Remember Your servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; do not look on the stubbornness of this people, or on their wickedness or their sin, 28 lest the land from which You brought us should say, “Because the Lord was not able to bring them to the land which He promised them, and because He hated them, He has brought them out to kill them in the wilderness.” 29 Yet they are Your people and Your inheritance, whom You brought out by Your mighty power and by Your outstretched arm.’1
The New King James Version (Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 1982), .
Deuteronomy 9:27–29 NKJV
27 Remember Your servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; do not look on the stubbornness of this people, or on their wickedness or their sin, 28 lest the land from which You brought us should say, “Because the Lord was not able to bring them to the land which He promised them, and because He hated them, He has brought them out to kill them in the wilderness.” 29 Yet they are Your people and Your inheritance, whom You brought out by Your mighty power and by Your outstretched arm.’

- “He has not dealt with us according to our sins,

Psalm 103:10 NKJV
10 He has not dealt with us according to our sins, Nor punished us according to our iniquities.
Nor punished us according to our iniquities.”
Lamentations 3:22 NKJV
22 Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not.
The New King James Version (Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 1982), .
Lamentations 3:22–24
22 Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not. 23 They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness. 24 “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “Therefore I hope in Him!”
Closing Illustration:
John 9:1–5 NKJV
1 Now as Jesus passed by, He saw a man who was blind from birth. 2 And His disciples asked Him, saying, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” 3 Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed in him. 4 I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work. 5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”
What am I thankful for, God being Good!
